Stars almost blow another lead, even series with Avalanche

It almost happened again, but the Dallas Stars hung on this time.

They escaped with a 5-3 win on Thursday night at American Airlines Center to tie their Western Conference second-round playoff series with the Colorado Avalanche at 1-1.

The Stars lost Game 1 on Tuesday night 4-3 in overtime after blowing a 3-0 lead.

Dallas led 4-0 after two periods on Thursday, but Colorado again rallied, scoring three goals in the third period to make it a one-goal game.

This time, though, the Stars didn't fold. Defenseman Esa Lindell notched an empty-net goal to clinch the game with 24 seconds left.

Another Dallas defenseman, Miro Heiskanen, scored twice while Roope Hintz had a goal and three assists. Jake Oettinger made 28 saves.

Heiskanen's first goal came on a power play, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead with 5:14 left in the first period. He scored on a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle, converting a pass from Hintz.

Hintz made it 2-0 1:57 into the second period with a goal from a bad angle along the goal line.

Then Heiskanen's second goal made it 3-0 as he scored again on the power play. His wrist shot from just above the left circle deflected off the stick of Colorado's Andrew Coligiano with 4:06 left in the middle period. It was Heiskanen's second career two-goal playoff game of his career.

Tyler Seguin's shorthanded goal made it 4-0 with 1:54 remaining in the second.  He put in a loose puck from the slot area.

The Avalanche put the pressure on with their comeback effort.

Joel Kiviranta put the Avalanche on the board 4:05 into the third period.

Brandon Duhaime made it 4-2 eight minutes into the third period with a shot from the high slot. It was Duhaime's first career playoff goal.

Then Arturri Lehkonen's shot deflected in off of Valeri Nichushkin's leg to make it 4-3 with 3:44 left in the third period. It was Nichushkin's ninth goal of the playoffs and his eighth consecutive playoff game with a goal dating back to last season.

Colorado pulled goalie Aleksandar Georgiev for the extra attacker. But the Avalanche were unable to find an equalizer, and Lindell sealed the result with his empty-netter.

Now the teams will turn their attention to Game 3 in Denver. Puck drop is set for Saturday at 10 p.m.
